He played for Leicester Tigers as a 17-year old, and made his England debut 2 years later. With Clive Woodward he formed a Centre partnership that played for Tigers, England and the British Lions tour to South Africa in 1980 . His elder son Alex plays at outside centre and was promoted to the Leicester first team squad for the 2005/6 season. His younger son Ollie is also a promising player for Leicester's academy.
