The Past Brothers Rugby League club were a Rugby League club from Brisbane , Australia that played in top level competition from their foundation in 1917 until 1998 . HISTORY The club was originally named Merthyr, after the locality of near New Farm in Brisbane's inner North-West. When district football was introduced in the 1930s, Brothers clearly defied the idea as they were not a location in Brisbane, unlike their competition counterparts Valleys, Norths, Souths, Easts and Wests. When the Brisbane Broncos entered the New South Wales Rugby League competition in 1988 the Brethren, like other Brisbane clubs, faced financial hardship. As a result, the club unsuccessfully merged with Pine Rivers and relocated to Bray Park, west of Redcliffe . In 1996 Brothers joined the new Queensland Cup competition, which replaced the Winfield State League. Still facing financial hardhsip, Brothers became feeder club to the Brisbane Broncos in 1998, and played their games out of Crosby Park and the Broncos' home ground ANZ Stadium . At the end of 1998 they were cut from the Queensland Cup. They unsuccessfully re-applied for a position in 2000 and 2001. In 2002 merged with Valleys to form the Brothers-Valleys club, who played in the 2004 Queensland Cup. 2006 In 2006 Brothers will compete in the South East Division . Their junior and senior teams will be based at Gibson Park, Stafford.
