CHRONOLOGY

FUTURE

It is planned to convert the line to a fully automated system (similar to the Line 14 ) by the end of 2010. It will be the first heavy duty line to be converted without interruption of traffic.

An extension of Line 1 from La Défense station to the center of Nanterre is in examination.

FACTS

Because of less advanced building techniques of the 1900s , line 1 of the Paris metro is the closest line to the surface; Many station have a steel beam structure comprising of both arched and beam section maintaining the large station roof. At the time of the building, the streets were dug up in open air to be finally covered up in order to hide the underground line. As a result, the line strictly follows the path of streets which are located above. This was done to both facilitate building and avoid the adjacent buildings' cellars. The Bastille station is located above the entrance of the tunnel of the Canal Saint-Martin , just below the pavement of the Place de la Bastille. Indeed, there was no way in 1900 to build underwater.

Unlike older trains on other lines, the cars of line 1 trains are all connected at one another by pedestrian platforms, allowing people to stand between those cars. Furthermore the number of seats is reduced compared to trains on other lines, and those trains are made of 6 cars instead of 5. Those specificities increase the standing room on the trains of the Paris' busiest metro line.

Despite being almost entirely underground (only the crossing of the Seine at the Pont de Neuilly is overground), the line 1 is fully covered by mobile phones networks.
