Pardubice District (''Okres Pardubice'' in Czech ) is district ('' Okres '') within Pardubice Region (''Pardubický kraj'') of the Czech Republic . Its capital is city of Pardubice .


OVERVIEW

With 888.98 km&2 and around 160,000 inhabitants Pardubice District is the smallest district of the region but has highest population density. Its terrain is mostly flat, dominated by Kunětice Mountain . Agriculture specialises on grain, cattle feed and vegetables. Chemical, engineering and electrotechnical industries are most important. Pardubice is main point of cultural life. Among tourist attractions are historical center of Pardubice, Kunětice Mountain Castle , baroque castle in Choltice , African museum dedicated to Emil Holub in Holice and recreational area around river Elbe .


GEOGRAPHY AND AGRICULTURE

As of December 31 2003 the district area is 888.98 Km&2 , including:
  • 60.23% of land is used for agriculture, from which 81.85% is arable land (49.30% of district area)

  • 39.77% is not used for agriculture, from which 63.47% are forests (25.24% of district area)

  • number of agricultural companies: 521

TRANSPORTATION

Pardubice has an international airport and is busy railway center. Once important Elbe river transportation is in depression. New highway (in direction to Olomouc ) is planned to relieve congestion on the roads.
