Pankow is a Borough of Berlin . In 2001, it was merged with the former boroughs of Prenzlauer Berg and Weißensee ; the resulting borough retained the name Pankow. It encompasses an area of 103.07 km&2 and has, as of 2003, about 347,100 inhabitants. Its current Mayor is Burkhard Kleinert ( PDS ). In the early days of East Germany , Pankow was the home to many members of the government. Western writers therefore often referred to Pankow as shorthand for the East German regime. EXTERNAL LINKS |
