Panda Express is a large " Fast Food " American Restaurant Chain serving Americanized Chinese Cuisine . Though recently a stand-alone restaurant with a drive-thru window opened in Southern California. It operates mainly inside Shopping Mall s, Supermarket s, Airport s and Strip Plaza s. The chain offers a wide variety of food such as Orange Flavored Chicken (the most popular and well known dish), Beef with Broccoli , and Mandarin Chicken. Most combo meals are served with Fried Rice , steamed Rice , or Chow Mein . Panda Express is headquartered in Rosemead , California . Panda Express is a fast-food equivalent of the more upscale Panda Inn , from which the franchise was derived. The Panda Restaurant Group was founded by Andrew Cherng and Peggy Cherng, a Chinese immigrant from the Yangzhou region of Jiangsu province. He started with a single restaurant in 1972 in Pasadena , California . The first Panda Express opened in 1983 , and the chain has steadily expanded across the United States since then.
