Ovingham is a Parish and Village in the Tyne Valley in south Northumberland . It lies on the River Tyne 16 kilometres (10 miles) east of Hexham . St Mary church has a late Saxon tower and fine 13th century lancet windows. In the porch is a stone slab commemorating Thomas Bewick who is buried in the churchyard. The Tyne Bridge is of 1883. The steel tubes are marked Dorman Long Middlesbrough , the firm which designed and built the Sydney Harbour Bridge . For such a small place, Ovingham has made quite a contribution to popular music in recent years. The punk-rock band China Drum formed in Ovingham in 1989, and more recently Rob Barker of Newcastle Upon Tyne -based Post-rock act Peace Burial At Sea grew up in the village. SEE ALSO |
