Ortler (''Ortler'' in German ; ''Cima Ortles'' in Italian ) is, at 3905 M Above Sea Level , the seventh highest mountain in the Eastern Alps and the main peak of the Ortler Group, a mountain range in South Tyrol and Trentino , Italy . It is the highest point in the Italian region of Trentino-South Tyrol , and was, before World War I , the highest point in the Austro-Hungarian Empire . It was first climbed by a local huntsman, ''Josef Pichler'' ("Pseirer-Josele") on 27 September 1804 . |
