Ormskirk is a small Market Town in England , with a population of approximately 23,500 ( 2005 est.). It is situated on the Lancashire plain, 13 miles north of Liverpool and 18 miles south of Preston . It is the base for West Lancashire District Council and is also home to Edge Hill College Of Higher Education . HISTORY It was founded when Viking s, led by Orme, settled in the area. It is believed that Orme was, or later became, a Christian as he built a Church , giving the town its name: Orme's Kirk. The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul is on the site of the original Kirk, and is the oldest building in the town. It is one of only three churches in England to have a tower and a spire, and is unique in that it has both at the same end of the building. (The other two are at Purton and Wanborough , both villages near Swindon .) In 1286 monks at nearby Burscough Priory were granted a Royal Charter by Edward I Of England to hold a weekly outdoor market: today the market is held twice-weekly, on Thursday and Saturday. TRANSPORT The A59 is the main road, with Preston to the north and Liverpool to the south. The town's Station is the northern terminus of Merseyrail , and the line continues through to Preston . This line was opened in 1846 as the Liverpool, Ormskirk And Preston Railway , which was bought by East Lancashire Railway . The Lancashire And Yorkshire Railway built the Skelmersdale Branch line to Skelmersdale and Rainford , which opened on 1 March 1858 . Passenger services ended on 5 November 1956 , goods to Rainford finished on 16 November 1961 and to Skelmersdale on 4 November 1963 . FAMOUS CONNECTIONS
