The Italians invaded Greece from Albania in October, 1940 but quickly got bogged down. The German troops struck from Romania and Bulgaria, outflanking the Greeks who had pushed the Italians back into their own territory. British units, transferred from north Africa ( Operation Lustre ) arrived too late to be of any real use. It has been suggested that fighting delayed the invasion of Russia ( Operation Barbarossa ) by five critical weeks, forcing the Germans to face bitter cold just as they were reaching their primary objectives. However, a newer alternative view is that operation Barbarossa would not have started earlier, had Marita never happened, and that the divisions allocated were insignificant, compared to the massive force of Barbarossa.
