During the Falklands War , Operations Black Buck 1 to '''Black Buck 6''' were a series of six extremely long-range bombing attacks by Royal Air Force Vulcan Bombers against Argentine positions in the Falkland Islands. The missions flew from the British air base on Ascension Island starting on the night of 30 April , 1982 . Victor Tankers provided multiple refuelings. Each aircraft carried more than twenty-one 1,000 pound bombs or a number of anti-radar missiles. At the time, these six raids were the longest combat flights in history. The results were more strategic than physical, as the Argentines were quickly able to repair damage to the radars and the runway at Port Stanley Airport . ''Black Buck'' is often credited with the strategic success of causing the Argentine Air Force (FAA) to fall all their Mirage III back to protect against the possibility of similar bombing raids on Argentina. The real fact was that FAA Grupo 8 Mirages were deployed to Comodoro Rivadavia and Rio Gallegos on April (before the raids) and remain there until June (when the war ended) against the Chile threat and serving as reserve for all the strike units due their lack of air refuelling capability.
