This includes the nations of the Empire , Bretonnia , Tilea , Estalia , Athel Loren the Border Princes and Norsca , as well as most of the Dwarf holds. In the past, before the rise of humans, the Old World was ruled by Dwarfs and Elves, until the 'War of the Beard'. The definition of the Old World, and the attention it receives in Games Workshop literature and products, is a prime example of the Games Workshop's Eurocentric spin on its games. Whilst Warhammer is meant to reflect the real world history in many aspects, it has a disproportionately strong focus on the history of Europeans, ignoring the ' Middle Eastern ' nations of Araby and ' Far Eastern ' nation of Cathay and missing out the ' African ' Southlands altogether, even though (as with Europe in the real world at the time of the game's setting) it admits that the Old World nations are not the most ancient, rich or powerful, even for humans. This tendency is largely understandable considering the Games Workshop's European origins and sales base. Warhammer (as with many modern works of fantasy) can also trace a direct evolutionary link to Tolkien's Middle Earth , Tolkien's view of Europe during its Bronze Age . |
