Old Dan Tucker

"Old Dan Tucker" is a song that was composed by Daniel D. Emmett . It was published by Atwills, N.Y. in 1843 .

Legend states that Emmett composed the tune when he was only 14 years old, naming the title character for himself and his dog, Tucker. Emmett, the legend goes, played the song publicly for the first time at age 15. A group of traveling entertainers had come to town, and they needed a Fiddle r. The villagers recommended Emmett to fill in, and the boy impressed the leader of the troupe with his playing and singing. That night he performed "Old Dan Tucker" in Blackface on the village green. The Canebrake Minstrels (2003), Website for ''Finer than Froghair''. Accessed 12 September 2005.

According to the Elbert County, Georgia , Chamber of Commerce, "Old Dan Tucker" was based on the Reverend Daniel Tucker , a preacher and ferry operator in Elbert County, whose grave remains on the eastern side of the county to this day.

According to ''Early Minstrel Show Music, 1843-1852'' by Robert B. Winans, "Old Dan Tucker" was the second-most popular Minstrel Show song after " Miss Lucy Long ".
