Ogunquit is a town located in York County, Maine . As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,226. Its name is pronounced "o-GUHN-kwit." With the motto "Beautiful Place by the Sea," Ogunquit is a popular summer resort, and home to the ''Ogunquit Playhouse''. HISTORY ]] Ogunquit, which meant "coastal lagoon" to native Abenaki Indians , was first settled by European Colonists after 1641 as a village within Wells . Principal industries included Fishing from Perkin's Cove, and Shipbuilding along the Ogunquit River. Besides constructing Schooner s and Brig s, local Shipwright s built the famous "Ogunquit Dory ." With weatherbeaten charm and a magnificent beach, the old village was discovered by Artist s and became an Art Colony . Particularly after 1898 , when the ''Ogunquit Art Colony'' was established, it was not unusual to see artists and fishermen plying their respective trades around Perkin's Cove. Several grand seaside hotels and inns were built to accommodate a growing influx of tourists. Today, Ogunquit is a vibrant seasonal resort town, having separated from Wells in 1980 . Visitors often arrive from great distances, many from Canada . GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 11.1 Km&2 (4.3 Mi&2 ). 10.6 km&2 (4.1 mi&2) of it is land and 0.5 km&2 (0.2 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 4.43% water. Ogunquit is drained by the Ogunquit River. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 1,226 people, 668 households, and 346 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 115.5/km&2 (299.0/mi&2). There were 2,114 housing units at an average density of 199.1/km&2 (515.6/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.53% White , 0.49% African American , 0.08% Native American , 0.49% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.08% from Other Races , and 0.33% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 668 households out of which 10.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% were Married Couples living together, 3.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 48.2% were non-families. 39.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.84 and the average family size was 2.41. In the town the population was spread out with 10.4% under the age of 18, 3.5% from 18 to 24, 18.0% from 25 to 44, 37.1% from 45 to 64, and 30.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 55 years. For every 100 females there were 109.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.0 males. The median income for a household in the town was $47,727, and the median income for a family was $56,731. Males had a median income of $44,583 versus $31,528 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $34,289. 4.2% of the population and 1.2% of families were below the Poverty Line . 4.6% of those under the age of 18 and 3.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
