The Ochre Pits are a popular tourist destination in the Northern Territory , Australia , approximately 50 kilometres west of Alice Springs along the Larapinta Trail . It features several layers of multi-coloured layered rock that used to be used by the Aborigine s for decorative painting. Before the arrival of European settlers in 1888 , a wide area around the Ochre Pits was affected by the Economy of the Pigment mine. The Colours can still be vividly seen today. SEE ALSO |
