Information About

Oceania Club Championship

The recent ( 1999 on) incarnations of the tournament have been organised by the Oceania Football Confederation in order to determine the Oceania representative at the FIFA Club World Championship s, although the Wollongong Wolves did not participate in a Club World Championship due to the cancellation of that particular tournament. From 2006 onwards the Oceania champions will no longer get direct entry to the main round of the Club World Cup but instead have to play a preliminary knock out game against the host (Japanese) champions for entry into the main tournament 1 .

In late March, Fifa president Sepp Blatter was unable to get the necessary support for the new format as a result Oceania will retain a direct entry to 2006 Club World Cup. Fifa will review the format next year. 2 .

FUTURE TOURNAMENTS

The 2006 tournament is set to be held in New Zealand ; with a qualifying tournament held in Fiji involving the weaker nations clubs. From the 2007 tournament onwards the OFC Club Championship will be replaced with an OFC Champions League involving two groups of three clubs each playing each other home and away (replacing the current one location tournament system) after a qualifying tournament for the clubs of the weaker nations.
