Oakland Community College





Oakland Community College, is a 2-year college located in the county of Oakland in the state of Michigan, US. It offers study in both general liberal arts education and specialized technical training for specific career fields. These are taught at the five campuses located throughout Oakland County. It is commonly referred to by its acronym "OCC".

Oakland Community College owns five campuses located throughout Oakland County : Auburn Hills Campus, Farmington Hills Campus, Highland Lakes Campus, Orchard Ridge Campus and Royal Oak Campus. There are two sets of semesters available to students: 15 - week semesters are offered August-December, January-May and May-August. Two 7 1/2 - week semesters are offered May-June and July-August.


HISTORY

The College was established on June 8 , 1964 . The college opened its doors in September 1965 , with an enrollment of 3,860 students on two campuses - Highland Lakes, and Auburn Hills, a former Army Nike missile site in Auburn Heights. In September 1967 , Orchard Ridge Campus opened followed by Southfield Campus and Royal Oak Campus.

The Highland Lakes Campus is located in what was Union Lake Township, which has now become part of Waterford Township. The building has been vastly renovated since the college bought it and is unrecognizable as it's former structure, a large tuberculosis sanatorium. Finding verification that this campus was a tuberculosis sanatorium is almost impossible on the internet for unknown reasons, but many living in the area still remember when the hospital was active.


STUDENT BODY

There are currently 74,000 degree and non-degree seeking students attending Oakland Community College, making it the 14th largest community college in the United States . With over 11% of Oakland County's High School Graduates attending Oakland Community College it has the largest freshman class in the state of Michigan for community colleges. The average class size is 24 students.


PROGRAMS OF STUDY

Oakland Community College offers associate degrees in Applied Science , Business Administration , General Studies, Liberal Arts and Science in over 100 two-year degree programs and over 45 one-year certificate programs.


INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Oakland Community College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and a member of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA).

Men's Varsity Sports include Basketball , Cross-country and Golf . Women's Varsity Sports include Basketball, Cross-country, Softball , Tennis and Volleyball . Men's Club Sports include Soccer .
