Northumbria University is located in Newcastle Upon Tyne in North East England . Its previous name was the '''University of Northumbria at Newcastle''', which it used until 2002 and remains the official name of the University, 'Northumbria University' being a trading name.
It has its origins in three regional , which became a major centre for the initial training of teachers with the incorporation of the City College of Education in 1974 , and subsequently the Northern Counties College of Education in 1976 .
The Carlisle campus, containing only about four hundred students, was taken over by the University Of Central Lancashire on August 1st 2004, which already had a campus at Penrith . This was to concentrate on the North-East . The two Cumbria campuses may become part of an eventual University of Cumbria.

It was inaugurated as a University in 1992 , becoming one of the Post-1992 Universities .

The Students' Union provides extensive facilities for inebriation, chiefly at Bar One and Reds. There is a cheesy dance night called Wiggle every Saturday in Reds and Venue. The monthly student newspaper is called Northumbria Student, which includes the popular entertainments section Poly Scene. The radio station, NSRfm, being shared with University Of Newcastle Upon Tyne is broadcast over the Internet.

Northumbria University has a population of about 25,044 students, of whom 17,921 are full-time.
