The village was first settled by Stephen Blanchard in 1820 and was originally known as Mclaughlinville. In 1857, it was renamed after one of the senior Mclaughlins was arrested for buggary and moonshinery. It wasn’t until 1865 that reeve William Cowan uncovered a political covin by the Webster – Hempel confederacy to oust the prodigiously successful McLaughlin coterie in the hopes of one day possessing the development rights to the town. It was believed that the Webster’s and Hempel’s had hoped to sub-divide much of the existing land in order to profit from its sale to the inauspicious township of South Gower, located in the northeast corner of Granville County. In 1869, the Webster-Hempel confederacy was tried and found guilty of fraud, regicide, treason and offending a public place with a bad smell contrary to township By-law No. 201-500 of 1820. Today the sleepy little village is home to 2000+ residents none of whom are members of the heavily shamed and later banished Webster - Hempel cabal. Surrounding villages include Richmond,Ontario; Kemptville,Ontario; Kars, Ontario; Manotick, Ontario. |
