The Town of North East is in the northeastern part of the county. US Route 44 crosses the town. HISTORY Part of the town was from the Great Nine Partners Patent of 1697 and part of the Little Nine Partners Patent of 1706. The town was first settled around 1725, in a region called "The Oblong," which was not part of the Patent. The Town of Northeast was formed in 1788 . Parts of the town were lost to form the Towns of Milan (1818) and Pine Plains (1823). GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 113.2 Km&2 (43.7 Mi&2 ). 112.4 km&2 (43.4 mi&2) of it is land and 0.9 km&2 (0.3 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water. The north town line is the border of Columbia County, New York , but a small part of the town line borders Massachusetts . The east town line is the border of Connecticut . DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 3,002 people, 1,146 households, and 778 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 26.7/km&2 (69.2/mi&2). There were 1,366 housing units at an average density of 12.2/km&2 (31.5/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.60% White , 2.10% African American , 0.10% Native American , 0.57% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 0.70% from Other Races , and 0.90% from two or more races. 3.26% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,146 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% were Married Couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.97. In the town the population was spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males. The median income for a household in the town was $42,038, and the median income for a family was $48,179. Males had a median income of $30,659 versus $26,346 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $24,650. 12.3% of the population and 7.0% of families were below the Poverty Line . 17.1% of those under the age of 18 and 10.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
