The NPA was established in the 1930s to counteract the rise of the Social Democratic Co-operative Commonwealth Federation . The party is generally right-of-centre, but socially liberal and supportive of Smart Growth approaches to development. Its seemingly contradictory name refers to the party's supporters being allied with different centrist and conservative parties at other levels of politics -- Conservatives and Liberals ; the British Columbia Liberal Party and, formerly, the British Columbia Social Credit Party at the provincial level.

The NPA dominated Vancouver City Council from the 1940s through 1972, when a new party, The Electors' Action Movement (TEAM), broke the NPA's dominance. The NPA returned to the majority in 1986 led by Gordon Campbell and held power through 2002, winning every council, park board, and school board seat in 1996. The left-of-centre Coalition Of Progressive Electors reduced the NPA to two of 11 seats in 2002, although the NPA regained a majority in 2005.
