The Ninth Doctor Adventures were a series of Spin-off novels based on the long running BBC Science Fiction Television Series '' Doctor Who '' and published under the BBC Books imprint. PUBLICATION HISTORY With the revival of the television series, BBC Books ceased the regular paperback Eighth Doctor Adventures in favour of a new range of hardback books featuring the Ninth Doctor and Rose . These have a reduced word count compared to BBC Books' previous ''Doctor Who'' novels. Although the Canonicity of most Doctor Who spin-offs is unclear, the 2005 series episode '' Boom Town '' makes a reference to the Doctor and Rose's trip to the Justicia system. This took place in ''The Monsters Inside'', making it the first spin-off novel to ever be explicitly referred to in the television series. All the novels except ''Only Human'' contain "Bad Wolf" References in common with the 2005 television series. ''Winner Takes All'' also features the recurring characters Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler ; Jackie also makes a cameo appearance in ''Only Human''. Unlike many of the BBC's earlier spin-off novels, no definite timeframe exists as to when each of the books take place, though the first three probably take place between '' World War Three '' and '' The Empty Child '', and the latter three (which feature Captain Jack ) between '' The Doctor Dances '' and ''Boom Town''. They can be read in any order. The first books in the series have proven to be very popular in the UK . The books were not initially available in North America , but became sporadically available in the late summer; in Canada , the books were not carried by the same distributor as the BBC Books paperbacks, and were initially available only through Comic Book shops and online retailers when Diamond Comics Distributors took up the contract. Within the television series, the character of the Doctor regenerated into the and Rose have now been announced; see Tenth Doctor Adventures for details. Range consultant Justin Richards told '' Doctor Who Magazine '' that there will be no Ninth Doctor novels in 2006 , and the decision as to whether to continue the Ninth Doctor Adventures as a separate range has not yet been taken. LIST OF NINTH DOCTOR ADVENTURES
SYNOPSES The Clockwise Man The Doctor and Rose travel back in time to London in the year 1924 in a trip to the British Exhibition , only to find themselves caught up in the hunt for a mysterious, inhuman murderer; meeting a woman who never shows her face; a cat that can return from the dead and people who may not even know the truth. They must solve the mystery before the whole of London is destroyed. The Monsters Inside The TARDIS takes the Doctor and Rose to the Justicia System — a prison camp comprising of the six planets in that solar system. The pair are separated and trapped in different environments, each determined to escape in their own distinctive styles. However, their plans are complicated when some old enemies show up. Are the Slitheen really attempting a takeover of Justicia, or is it something far more sinister? This book features another family from the same race as the Slitheen called the Blathreen, and is the first Ninth Doctor story, televised or otherwise, to take place away from Earth (a fact that is addressed within the text itself). It is also the first spin-off book to be referenced on-screen (in the episode '' Boom Town ''). Winner Takes All The time travellers return to present-day Earth and become intrigued by the latest craze, the computer game ''Death to Mantodeans''. Is the game as harmless as it seems and even if it is, why are so many people going on holiday and not coming back? The Doctor and Rose need Mickey Smith 's help as Earth is threatened once more by aliens. The Deviant Strain The TARDIS lands the Doctor, Rose and Jack at an abandoned Soviet naval base. However, something is still lurking — something which is treating all humans, including Rose and Jack, as prey. But as the Doctor investigates further, he uncovers an experiment years in the making. Only Human The presence of a Neanderthal on present-day Earth alerts the Doctor, Rose and Jack to the fact that someone is meddling with time. In order to learn the truth, they must travel back 28,000 years, where they meet humans of the past and future — and something far, far worse. The Stealer of Dreams It seems an easy enough position to take — on a world where daring to dream is a crime, the Doctor sides with a pirate television station that is trying to foment rebellion. However, he begins to discover that things are not as simple as that, and dreams can easily become nightmares. NOTES Behind the chapter numbers in the books are symbols similar to the "Gallifreyan writing" seen in the series. The same symbols appear on the spines, and are presumably Gallifreyan numbers. The recurring patterns in the symbols suggest that Time Lord s count in Base Seven . SEE ALSO |
