is a ''character class'' found in several titles of
Square Enix 's ''
Final Fantasy '' series of
Console Role-playing Games . They are generally both fast and powerful, combining the agility of a ''
Thief '' and strength of a ''
Fighter ''. However, in order to achieve this level of dexterity, ''Ninja'' are limited in defense, unable to wear heavy armor.
They also have a number of other job specific abilities, which throughout the course of the series have included magic, ambidextrous fighting, stealing of items, and throwing weapons. ''Ninja'' usually equip either swords or daggers. In some games they wield Ninja-specific swords.
The ''Ninja'' class has appeared in the following games in the series:
In Final Fantasy I, the Ninja is simply an upgraded member of the
Thief class, given a new sprite and the ability to cast low-level Black Magic.
In Final Fantasy III, the Ninja is the ultimate physical class, and has the ability to equip any armor and weapon, including the powerful Shurikens. In the DS remake, however, the Ninja is toned down so that it is more on the level of other Jobs.
In Final Fantasy IV,
Edge blends the abilities of a Ninja, spellcaster and Thief, possessing the Throw and Steal commands (which were presented in the original US port as "Dart" and "Sneak," respectively) as well as a suite of unique Ninja-magic spells, most of which emulate existing Black and White magic spells.
In Final Fantasy V, the Ninja job class had a number of optional special commands that were geared toward stealth. In addition to the Throw command and a passive Ambidexterity ability, the Ninja could use smoke bombs to cover the party's escape from a battle and also conjure multiple images to deflect enemy attacks -- both of which were abilities that Edge had among his suite of spells in Final Fantasy IV. The Ninja also had a passive ability that increased the party's chances of gaining the first attack in a battle.
In Final Fantasy VI, the mercenary
Shadow is identified as an Assassin, but is never directly called a Ninja (despite his suggestive black outfit, complete with hood and facemask). Still, he does seem to uphold the Final Fantasy Ninja tradition, as his special talent is the Throw command. Shadow can throw an assortment of throwing stars, as well as any of the party's unused weaponry. In addition, there are items in Final Fantasy VI called "Skeans," which, when thrown by Shadow, emulate elemental/effect spells - Fire, Inviz, Water and Bolt are the different flavors of Skeans - that seem to be an homage to Edge's repertoire of unique magics.
In Final Fantasy VII, most characters lack proper job titles, as their uniqueness is instead found in their choice of weapon, their Limit Break abilities and the player's ability to customize each character with Materia, which confer traditional Final Fantasy spells and job skills.
Yuffie Kisaragi is, however, described as a "Ninja," and does seem to fulfill the role within the parameters of Final Fantasy VII's system. Her weapon-type is a thrown and returning dart, which takes various forms depending on which weapon is equipped. She also weilds the "Throw" materia upon recruitment.
In Final Fantasy IX,
Amarant is a hybrid character not unlike Edge. The classes Amarant seems to mix are the Ninja and the Monk, with his Flair abilities showcasing a number of Final Fantasy Monk mainstay powers (such as Chakra), and his ability to Throw weapons in the party's inventory.
In Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, only Humans were allowed to perform the Job of Ninja, but the
Viera had a very similar class known as an ''Assassin'', which were profecient in both Katanas and Bows. They also lacked the Ninja ability "Dual Wield", which allowed the player to Wield two weapons at a time.
In ''Final Fantasy XI'', the Ninja job uses a special type of magic that uses tools for a variety of effects. All of the abilities are in their original Japanese name even in the English releases, perhaps to give the job an authentically exotic feel.
