Nina Myers is a Fictional character on the television series, '' 24 '', played by Sarah Clarke . Nina was second-in-command of the Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) during the first season of the show, behind Jack Bauer , who was her former lover. She was also involved with Tony Almeida , who later became Special Agent in Charge of CTU. She served as a policy analyst for the United Nations Security Council before joining CTU. Nina initially served under Christopher Henderson , and was Division Leader for Operation Proteus, where Jack Bauer was Team Leader. When Henderson was forced to resign amid bribery charges, Jack became Nina's supervisor, and Nina in turn became Jack's closest confederate. Unbenknownst to her co-workers, Nina was "dirty", involved in several treasonous actions throughout her tenure in CTU. Day 1 Nina withstood much scrutiny and helped Jack immensely during the first several hours of day 1, where Ira Gaines was in charge of the operation. Knowing there was a backup plan, she played along with Jack in an attempt to maintain her cover. However, things didn't go her way when Ira Gaines, unaware of her double-agent status, ordered her killed at the hand of Jack Bauer. Jack saved her life by putting her in a Flak Jacket before the shot. However, when Plan B (the Drazen plan) went into effect, she was fully in their pay, and sold out CTU. At the end of the first season, it was revealed that Nina, also known as Yelena, was a traitor, who had been aiding the assassination attempts on (then Senator, later President) David Palmer in conjunction with the Drazen family. After her cover was blown, Nina attempted to run from CTU and flee the United States to a contact in Germany, but Jack's wife Teri overheard a conversation that would have compromised her escape, so Nina killed Teri. Jack identified her as the traitor by tracking video evidence that she murdered Jamey Farrell , who, though a Double Agent sold to Ira Gaines, did not have a Drazen connection. Nina had previously betrayed herself by telling Jack that the body of his daughter, Kim Bauer had been recovered by the harbor patrol, but after Jack took out the Drazens (in the complete opposite of what Nina's lie was supposed to effect), Jack's request for the body (and the realization that there was none found) led him to identify Nina as a traitor. Jack did wish to murder Nina, and had his chance on day 1, but restrained himself at the urging of CTU agent George Mason . Nina revealed that she was not actually working for the Drazens, but an unknown party who supported them. Day 2 Nina was tried and convicted, and sent to prison. In the second season, Jack traced the person who sold the plans about CTU to a group that bombed it to Nina. Jack developed a plan with two edges; the first a presidential pardon for Nina, and the second his personal vendetta against her, which led Nina to believe Jack cared more about killing her for the murder of his wife than anything else. Nina accepted both aspects, to the point where, once she got a drop on Jack, she demanded a pardon for the murder of Jack Bauer as an additional condition of her cooperation. Under Jack's urging, President Palmer agreed, though she was captured shortly afterwards, unable to carry out her threat to Jack. President Palmer lived up to his end of the agreement, though he did place her in custody in Los Angeles, the target of the Nuclear Bomb , to share in the fate of everybody else. Day 3 In the third season, Jack encountered Nina again in Mexico while both were attempting to buy a deadly Biological Weapon (although for different reasons). While Nina attempted to back out when it was revealed that Jack was involved, the seller Michael Amador forced her to stay by reminding her that her buyer would kill her if she didn't deliver. Nina won the auction, but was followed and nearly captured by Jack in hopes of implementing a deal. She soon turned the cards in her favor, knocking Jack unconscious. When he awakened, she questioned his motives, and while he tried to tell her that he was working separately from CTU she didn't believe him. Sitting on her knees and running her hands up and down his thighs, she implored him to "Convince me", resulting in a passionate kiss. Her motives for initiating the kiss are unknown, but it is widely speculated that her feelings for him never died away, and that she enjoyed playing such games with him. She felt him lying, however, and pulled away only to be captured by him and forced to comply with his wishes. She retrieved the virus from Amador, only to have it revealed as a bomb designed to kill her. The true virus was recovered later in the series. She was taken back to CTU headquarters, on the plane to which she manipulated Jack into unleashing a deadly computer virus into CTU's system. She had designed the virus during her tenure at CTU, and it was meant to reveal information to terrorist cells around the world. In return for killing the virus, she demanded to be taken back to Mexico and let free. Jack refused, and computer analyst Chloe O'Brian was able to stop it. At CTU, Nina was interrogated by former lover Tony Almeida. She revealed no information, only making sarcastic references to their previous relationship and his new marriage. He eventually gave in and sent a torture expert in to try to extract information from her. As he worked on her, Tony asked Nina, "How much more of this do you want to endure?" "I think that this is about it," she replied, and jammed the interrogator's needle into her carotid artery. She was rushed to the clinic at CTU, where doctors were able to get a makeshift bandage in place. Jack was uncomfortable with the idea of her being left unguarded, but barely had time to express his hesitation before an alarm went off, signalling her escape. She was cornered by Jack's daughter Kim, who by this time was working for CTU. Nina implored Kim to put the gun down and leave, saying that she didn't want to hurt her. The standoff was interrupted when Jack shot Nina in the shoulder. Though Nina attempted to convince Jack that she was still of value alive, Jack did not believe her. Nina then attempted to get her gun, but it is clear that after being shot, she is immobile and is only able to stretch out her fingers toward it. Jack, standing over her supine body, shot her three times, killing her. Jack was also standing directly in front of a security camera, which may have been purposeful to block the view of her arm. BACKGROUND Little is known about Nina's history or motives. However she is '' It is not clear who Nina was working for. Some fans speculate that it may have been Max , the main villain of season 2 and ''24: The Game'', but he is dead before season 3 begins. It is possible that Nina was motivated purely by money, and would have sold any information to any one. |
