In the Pre-'' Crisis On Infinite Earths '' storyline of ''Superman'' (Vol.1) #158 (Jan. 1963), Nightwing was an alias used by Superman in adventures shared with Jimmy Olsen in the city of Kandor , a Kryptonian city that had been shrunken and preserved in a bottle.

In Kandor, Superman had no powers and was branded an outlaw due to a misunderstanding. To protect themselves, Superman and Jimmy created vigilante identities inspired by (for Jimmy).

The direct association between Superman and the role of Nightwing was restored in 2001's '''' #111 wherein Superman and Lois Lane travel to the Kryptonian city, where they were greeted as "Nightwing" and "Flamebird".

In a 1977 comic book, Superman's second cousin and doppelganger Van-Zee took up the cape of Nightwing and a number of adventures of Nightwing and Flamebird were published, often in Superman Family .

After Superman's departure, the identities were assumed by two Kandorians named Van-Zee and Ak-Var. Both Nightwing and Flamebird teams met with their inspirations, Batman and Robin, for an adventure in Kandor which would prove especially important to the young Boy Wonder.

Eventually, the maturing Dick Grayson grew weary of his role as Batman's young sidekick.

Recalling his adventure on Kandor, he renamed himself Nightwing .

The rebooting of the DC continuity connected with ''Crisis on Infinite Earths'' robbed Superman of Kandor, but he remembered now Nightwing as an urban legend of Krypton instead, a story he shared with Dick Grayson, who would take up the identity.

During the DC Comics event ''One Year Later'', three Nightwings (in addition to Dick Grayson) will surface. Currently, the resurrected Jason Todd is using the costume and name of Dick's Nightwing. Both men fight crime in New York City. Solicitations for ''Nightwing'' #122 also show that a female Metahuman Nightwing will surface near the end of the story arc, and will be involved in the fight to be called Nightwing.

In the 2006's ''Supergirl'' #6, Kara ( Power Girl ) and Supergirl assume the identities of Nightwing and Flamebird as the dynamic duo of the Post-Crisis Kandor. This storyline will be limited to only one issue, after which the girls will resume their normal codenames.

MARVEL COMICS' NIGHTWING

Marvel Comics has its own Nightwing detectives, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing. Their private investigative service is named Nightwing Restorations, but they are better known as the Daughters of the Dragon.

IN OTHER MEDIA

In media other than Comic Book s, Nightwing has appeared exclusively as the Dick Grayson version of the character.

Grayson's most notable TV appearances, as Nightwing, were on '''', Dick was voiced by actor Loren Lester .

An episode, "Old Wounds", explained that Grayson (then still Robin) had come to blows with Batman over the Dark Knight's controlling nature and increasing ruthlessness, and that Dick had left Gotham as a result. He returned years later as Nightwing, and, though he worked with Batman several times over the course of the series, never fully reconciled with his former mentor

Nightwing has a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo in the '' Justice League Unlimited '' episode "Grudge Match", apparently now having moved to Blüdhaven to start his own career.

Dick has also made a cameo on the original '' Justice League '' series, appearing very briefly in the episode "The Savage Time" with alternate versions of Barbara Gordon , Tim Drake , and Cassandra Cain .

Nightwing also appeared briefly in the '' Teen Titans '' animated series in the episode "How Long is Forever?" as the future identity of Robin (another argument in favor of the theory that the animated Robin of the Titans continuity is really Grayson).
