DEMOGRAPHICS In the 2004 - 2005 school year, the total student population was 1401. 57% were White , 34% were Asian , 3% were Hispanic , 1% were African American , and 5% were multi-ethnic. 20% of students speak a first language other than English , and 7% qualify for free or reduced lunches. ACHIEVEMENTS Due to its extensive Advanced Placement course offering, Newport High School has consistently been ranked one of the best schools in the nation, ranking in the Top 20 List of Best High Schools by Newsweek Magazine as measured by the number of AP tests divided by the number of seniors in the school. Newport was also selected as a Blue Ribbon School Of Excellence in 2003 by the U.S. Department Of Education . MUSIC Newport High is also well known for its outstanding music ensembles. During the fall, the Newport Pride Marching band is also an fantastic showcase in the Newport community. The band has received many awards at competitions like the Auburn Veteran's Day Marching Competition, Harvest Festival, Cavalcade of Bands and many parades throughout the Pacific Northwest. Outside of the regular school hours, students try out every year for jazz band. The Newport Jazz Ensemble I has been a consistent winner, having placed at festivals such at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, Bellevue Jazz Festival, BCC Jazz Festival, Clark College Jazz Festival and more. They recently were selected among 15 high school finalist bands to compete in New York City at the Essentially Ellington Festival. This prestigious festival receives applications from all of North America, and only the best are selected to compete at Lincoln Center, NYC. The band also was a finalist in 2001. Other oustanding ensembles at Newport include the Wind Ensemble, which consistenly places top at local and state festivals. Newport Symphony I, the top orchestra, has also been oustanding at a number of festivals including the Northwest Orchestra Festival in Gresham, OR and has been ranked as one of the top 2 orchestras of the 3A division for the past four years. Newport Strings, the freshman orchestra won third place in their division in 2006 at the Northwest Orchestra Festival down in Gresham, Oregon. This is the first time a lower group orchestra out of Symphony I that have won a trophy at the festival. REFERENCES |
