GEOGRAPHY Newport is located at 35°36'43" North, 91°15'44" West (35.611820, -91.262158). Newport lies on the White River . According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 34.4 Km&2 (13.3 Mi&2 ). 33.7 km&2 (13.0 mi&2) of it is land and 0.7 km&2 (0.3 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 2.03% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 7,811 people, 2,690 households, and 1,702 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 231.5/km&2 (599.2/mi&2). There were 3,118 housing units at an average density of 92.4/km&2 (239.2/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 66.57% White , 31.76% Black or African American , 0.27% Native American , 0.33% Asian , 0.01% Pacific Islander , 0.28% from Other Races , and 0.77% from two or more races. 1.13% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 2,690 households out of which 26.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% were Married Couples living together, 17.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.90. In the city the population was spread out with 19.6% under the age of 18, 16.7% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 84.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.9 males. The median income for a household in the city was $24,151, and the median income for a family was $33,500. Males had a median income of $29,943 versus $17,437 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $15,757. 22.8% of the population and 17.7% of families were below the Poverty Line . 36.1% of those under the age of 18 and 18.1% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
