NY 78 is most closely identified in the region with Transit Road, a major north-south trunk road through the center of Erie County and Niagara County . In those two counties, Transit Road is a major road between the towns it passes. It joins Transit Road north of East Aurora and stays with to its end in Lockport . After that, 78 continues north, as the Olcott-Lockport Road, to NY 18 just short of the Lake Ontario shoreline at Olcott . In Erie and Niagara Counties, Transit Road marks the town lines separating a number of towns as the road was laid out on the original transit line from the Holland Land Company survey that bisected the original Niagara County (which now includes Erie County ), giving the road its name. East of East Aurora, NYS route 78 is briefly part of US Route 20A before turning off to the southeast as Strykersville Road. After passing through Java Center in Java , Route 78 joins NYS Route 98 , turning south before breaking off. It then becomes and east-west route, turning northeast in the Town Of Wethersfield just before terminating at NYS Route 19 above Gainesville. The portions crossing through larger towns/cities are heavily lined with both local and chain commerce. SEE ALSO |
