Information About

New York State Route 5

New York State Highway 5 is a 370 mile (595 km) long New York State Highway that runs between the New York / Pennsylvania border at the Town Of Ripley in Chautauqua County and downtown City Of Albany in Albany County where it intersects with NY 32 . Prior to the construction of the New York State Thruway , it was one of two main east-west highways traversing upstate New York (along with US 20 , with which NY 5 is coincident for some distance in Genesee and Livingston counties and a very short distance in Chautauqua County).

Although it is no longer commonly used for long distance travel, it is still regionally important. Route 5 is "Main Street" in two of upstate New York's three largest cities, Buffalo and Syracuse , "State Street" in Schenectady , and "Central Avenue" in Albany , the state capital. It is a major local road in many other locations along its path.

At the New York/Pennsylvania line, NY 5 becomes Pennsylvania State Highway 5 and continues toward Erie, Pennsylvania .
