''New University'' may refer to one of the several Universities founded in the 1960s following the Robbins Report on Higher Education , often called Plate Glass Universities . The term has more recently been used to describe any of the former Polytechnic s or colleges of higher education that were given the status of universities by John Major 's government in 1992 , or colleges that have been granted university status since then, also called Post-1992 Universities or Modern Universities.
