New Scotland is a Town located in Albany County, New York , USA . As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,626.

The Town of New Scotland is southeast of Albany, New York , the state capital. New Scotland is centrally located in the county.


HISTORY

The town was settled around 1660.
The Town of New Scotland was founded in 1832 from the west part of Town Of Bethlehem .


GEOGRAPHY

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 151.3 Km&2 (58.4 Mi&2 ). 150.4 km&2 (58.1 mi&2) of it is land and 0.9 km&2 (0.3 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.57% water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 8,626 people, 3,341 households, and 2,509 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 57.4/km&2 (148.6/mi&2). There were 3,470 housing units at an average density of 23.1/km&2 (59.8/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.17% White , 0.28% African American , 0.20% Native American , 0.50% Asian , 0.20% from Other Races , and 0.66% from two or more races. 0.87% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,341 households out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% were Married Couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% were non-families. 20.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 29.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $58,956, and the median income for a family was $65,753. Males had a median income of $44,138 versus $33,941 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $29,231. 4.1% of the population and 2.5% of families were below the Poverty Line . 4.6% of those under the age of 18 and 4.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

  • Voorheesville -- The Village of Voorheesville is in the northeastern part of the town.
