New Milford is a borough located in Bergen County , New Jersey . As of the United States 2000 Census , the borough had a total population of 16,400.

New Milford was incorporated as a borough on March 11 , 1922 , from what remined of Palisades Township . With the creation of New Milford, Palisades Township (which had been created in 1871) was dissolved.

GEOGRAPHY

New Milford is located at 40°56'10" North, 74°1'8" West (40.936211, -74.018809).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the borough has a total area of 6.0 Km&2 (2.3 Mi&2 ). 6.0 km&2 (2.3 mi&2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


DEMOGRAPHIC

As of the Census of 2000, there were 16,400 people, 6,346 households, and 4,277 families residing in the borough. The Population Density was 2,741.2/km&2 (7,099.0/mi&2). There were 6,437 housing units at an average density of 1,075.9/km&2 (2,786.4/mi&2). The racial makeup of the borough was 78.59% White , 2.62% African American , 0.12% Native American , 14.76% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 1.86% from Other Races , and 2.04% from two or more races. 8.09% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 6,346 households out of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% were Married Couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% were non-families. 28.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.18.

In the borough the population was spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $59,118, and the median income for a family was $77,216. Males had a median income of $46,463 versus $36,987 for females. The Per Capita Income for the borough was $29,064. 3.4% of the population and 1.7% of families were below the Poverty Line . 2.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.5% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.


GOVERNMENT


Local government

The Mayor of New Milford is Frank DeBari. The members of the Borough Council are Michael Gadaleta (President), Anthony Biscottini, R. Lynden Day, Tina DeLucia, Joseph Murrary and Ann Subrizi. The six members of the Borough Council are elected in partisan elections to three-year terms on a staggered basis.


Federal, state and county representation

New Milford is part of New Jersey's 37th Legislative District and is split between the Fifth and Ninth Congressional Districts.






EDUCATION

The .

New Milford has had a very successful high school baseball team the past two years. In both 2004 and 2005 the team made it to the state semifinals. In 2004, the team lost in the state finals.
