The New Hebrides issued Banknotes starting in 1921 with a 25 francs note issued by the ''Comptoirs Francais des Nouvelles Hebrides'' (French Counters of the New Hebrides) dated “22 Aout 1921” (22nd of August 1921). This is a very rare note. The New Hebrides began issuing banknotes again in 1941. There were issues made by the French National Service of the Free French administration and others which were overprints on New Caledonia n banknotes. These notes were denominated in French francs. In 1945, the CFP Franc was introduced to insulate France's Pacific colonies from the devaluation of the French Franc . New coins were issued, with the New Hebrides using the coins of New Caledonia. The first New Hebrides coin to be put into circulation was the silver 100 francs of 1966 , followed by the 10 and 20 francs in 1967 , and the 1, 2 and 5 francs in 1970 . In 1969, the New Hebrides franc broke away from the CFP Franc , mantaining a relationship with the Australian dollar of 100 francs = 1 dollar. This lasted until 1973. Upon the independence of the New Hebrides in 1980 and its admission to the Commonwealth Of Nations as the Republic Of Vanuatu , the New Hebrides franc remained in circulation. In 1982 , a final series of coins in the name of the New Hebrides was struck at the Paris Mint. In 1983, the franc was replaced by the Vatu at par. At the same time, the Australian dollar ceased to officially circulate. |
