National Wildlife Refuge




National Wildlife Refuge is a designation for certain Protected Areas Of The United States managed by the United States Fish And Wildlife Service . The National Wildlife Refuge system is a network of lands and waters managed to protect wildlife and wildlife habitat. The system consists of over 500 refuges across the nation. Nearly all of them have the words "National Wildlife Refuge", "Wetland Management District", or "Wildlife Management Area" in their names; notable exceptions include:



HISTORY

The National Wildlife Refuge System was established by the National Wildlife Refuge System Administration Act Of 1966 , "for the purpose of consolidating the authorities relating to the various categories of areas that are administered by the Secretary for the conservation of fish and wildlife, including species that are threatened with extinction, all lands, waters, and interests therein administered by the Secretary as wildlife refuges, areas for the protection and conservation of fish and wildlife that are threatened with extinction, wildlife ranges, game ranges, wildlife management areas, or waterfowl production areas." {Link without Title}

The National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act Of 1997 builds upon and amends this initial legislation.
