(''Siorrachd Inbhir Narann'' in
Gaelic ) is one of the
Registration Counties Of Scotland , centred around
Nairn . It has a northern coastline onto the
Moray Firth . It was also in use as a
County of
Scotland for general administrative purposes until 1975.
Nairnshire had a number of
Exclave s, the most considerable of which was situated some distance away from the former county in Inverness-shire. Another sizable portion existed in
Ross-shire , on the
Black Isle , around the village of
Urquhart . Other, smaller detached parts also existed in
Morayshire (not shown on map due to their small size).
With the
Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889 these detached parts became part of their host territorities. Nairnshire County Council existed between 1889 and 1975, after which time the area became part of the
Highland Region , now the Highland
Council Area .
