ORIGINS It is a title denoting a village or Lineage headman or Commander or Governor and was granted by Kings and petty cheifs for those who were responsible for collecting taxes and maintaining order. As such eventually in Modern times it was inherited as a title by many although they no longer were either collecting taxes or were in any in ledership positions in villages. It is also belived to be a Telugu derivation of the Sanskrit title for a head of a band of soldiers known as Nayaka the protector. TITLE USAGE In Andhra and Telangana Social Groups such as Kapu , Balija, Telaga have this title.In Rayalaseema Balija Naidu and Kamma have it. Today the title users are found in all walks of life. In Tamil Nadu many formerly Telugu and Kannada speaking descendants of soldiers who are supposed to have accompanied the Vijayanagar , Maratha expansion use it as an honorific title. It is also used in tandem with another title Naiker by these groups. Naiker is also used as a title by the numerous Tamil origin Vanniar s thus confusing the ethnic landscape further and allowing many different caste and Ethnic identities to exist at the same time. USAGE ABROAD It is used as a surname in South Africa where a variant spelling Naidoo is used amongst its Tamil citizens. The usage does not denote Telugu ancestry any longer as inter marriege has diluted such identities. In Sri Lanka it is used amongst the Indian origin Hill Country Tamils and in Mauritius and Malaysia it is a surname of respective Tamil populations. In Fiji , Trinidad And Tobago and Guyana it is a surname of the broder Indian Diaspora and has losts it's South Indian origins completely. PROMINENT PERSONS
