Murdochville, Quebec is a small mining community at the tender age of 50, the town of Murdochville is learning to live without the stacks of Mines Gaspe. The mine closed in 1999 leaving the town to fight for survival. After several close calls, the small town has decided to fight back and turn around the economic uncertanties that fell onto the town. The creation of several large windmills projects along with the deversification of the local economy; Murdochville will have a fighting chance! Murdochville also laid the ground works for several of the large unions battles and ideas that exist today. Workers in Murdochville fought for their rights in 1957 which led to the adoption of several new laws and rights for unionized workers in la Belle Province. For a small town Murdochvilles` mining operations were a big operation.Basically starting with raw ore and turning it into a pure copper anode as an end product. The mine had an open pit, underground, crushers, concentrator department with leaching and a waste tailing operation, and of course at the end of the line the smelter which was the last resource the mine had running at closure!
