Mukkuvar is a fishing community, living in the coastal districts of southern Kerala, south west of Tamil Nadu in India and also in Sri Lanka. It is believed that these people are basically from East coast of Tamil Nadu who then migrated to Kerala and Sri Lanka. Also some of them have remigrated from Sri Lanka back to India and settled in the south western coastal side of India. Most of the members of this community are Roman Catholics even though many of them converted to Evengelical Christianity in the recent years. Many of the Mukkuvars do a variety of jobs, including engineering, education, clerical, etc, major part of the community does fishing or fishing related works. However there are so many entrepreneurs and educationists among them. |
