Information About

Mt Gravatt, Queensland

Mt Gravatt is named after Lieutenant George Gravatt who was the commander of the Moreton Bay Settlement for two months in 1839, before being transferred to India where he died in 1843.

Between 1953 and 1969 electric Tram s connected the suburb with Brisbane's Central Business District , running along Logan Road. Since then public transport has been provided by Bus es operated by Brisbane Transport .

Mount Gravatt has increasingly become an important centre in the last 15 years. In terms of infrastructure, Logan Road and the Pacific Motorway run through it, in addition to the South-East Busway . Westfield Garden City , a large shopping centre opened in 1970 , is a regional "hub", containing services and popular restaurants, with a bus interchange and the Upper Mount Gravatt Busway Station immediately below it.

Together with Indooroopilly in the west, Chermside , on the north-side, and Carindale in the southeast the suburb has been described as a mini- CBD .
Nearby is the State Netball Centre, a major Police district station and a regional ATO office.

As such, Mount Gravatt has become one of the major centres outside of the CBD, especially for those who reside on the south of the city.

The people of greater Mount Gravatt are represented by the State parliamentary seats of Mansfield and Mount Gravatt and the federal seats of Bonner , Griffith and Moreton . The changing Socio-economic conditions of the area have made the seats conducive, at least federally, to the Liberal - National Coalition Government.

The Mt Gravatt Showgrounds are an important centre for cultural and community activities and the site of the annual Mt Gravatt Show, an agricultural fair. The grounds are positioned on Logan Road, opposite the Mega-church , Garden City Christian Church , which is also a focal point of the community. This is in addition to the large Gateway Baptist Church on Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road and Christian Outreach Centre on Wecker Road.
