Information About

Mozenrath

Mozenrath is a young evil Sorcerer , often compared to the villain of the movie, Jafar . His exact age is unknown, but it is said that he's around the same age as Aladdin. He is the best known Villain from the series, and during the show's run gathered several fans who appreciated the character's charm, ruthlessness, gothic look, and impeccable dress sense. He is possibly the most powerful villain Aladdin has ever faced, as his powers rival even those of Jafar and Mirage .

BACKGROUND

Mozenrath is a power hungry young sorcerer who overthrew his sadistic and ruthless master Destane, and single handedly conquered the Land of the Black Sands and its undead population. It is hinted that he turned Destane into a Mamluck. His floating fish familiar Xerxes and his "half dead shambling" Mamlucks ( Zombies ) are loyal to him and will follow any orders of Mozenrath.

He is very powerful, cunning and deceptive. On his right hand, he wears a magical Gauntlet that gives him tremendous magical power. This power comes at a price though, as the flesh beneath the Gauntlet has rotted away, leaving only a skeletal hand.

One day, Mozenrath's lust for power led him to Agrabah where he tried to talk Aladdin into helping him. Aladdin, however, tricked the sorcerer so that the magic beast, Therdack, turned against Mozenrath. From that day on, Mozenrath vowed he would destroy his new nemesis, Aladdin, and his loved ones. Through the course of the series he tried to kill Aladdin and his friends, nearly succeeding on several occasions, only to be defeated in the end. In the episode that Mozenrath debuted in, Iago referred to the sorcerer as "Jafar Jr." although there is no evidence whatsoever that he and Jafar are related, so it is more likely that he was simply referring to the power hungry and strangely charismatic nature of the villain.

The first idea for Aladdin And The King Of Thieves story line involved Mozenrath. The plot was that the hero and villain would turn out to be brothers. However (according to one of the writers) everyone thought they should steer away from the TV show and that, and the fact that they couldn't get in touch with Jonathan Brandis , prompted them to move on to another relative of Aladdin's - his father.

CHARACTER

The character of Mozenrath is one of the more compelling in the series, partly because he successfully transcends traditional Disney villain stereotypes: he is not unattractive nor gullible, nor humourously incompetent. Mozenrath is, instead, highly intelligent, witty, and adaptive. Added to this is his inherent mystique - his past is hinted at but never revealed entirely. His complexity makes him a show-stealer. When he is defeated, it is never because of any weird character flaws or gullibility.

Also, Mozenrath is clearly depicted as a strong character, rather than a pampered princeling; he has clearly fought for everything that he has. At one time, he was an apprentice of the sorcerer Destane. We are told little about Destane beyond that he was a magician so ruthless, "even Jafar steered clear of him". It is conceivable that Destane poisoned the young man's mind, molding him into a villain. With the end of the show's run, we may never know Mozenrath's background with certainty.

Regardless, Mozenrath is not a depressing character, as he still likes a good laugh and enjoys pursuing his goals. But the episodes have characterized him as an enemy with secrets. While the other villains are foils to the show's protagonists, Mozenrath stands as a fully-realised character in his own right.
