Created by royal patent on , 2006 GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 117.4 Km&2 (45.3 Mi&2 ). 114.0 km&2 (44.0 mi&2) of it is land and 3.4 km&2 (1.3 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 2.93% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 3,412 people, 1,286 households, and 910 families residing in the township. The Population Density was 29.9/km&2 (77.5/mi&2). There were 1,588 housing units at an average density of 13.9/km&2 (36.1/mi&2). The racial makeup of the township was 95.25% White , 1.79% African American , 0.18% Native American , 0.67% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 1.08% from Other Races , and 1.03% from two or more races. 3.28% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,286 households out of which 34.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% were Married Couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.14. In the township the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 107.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.5 males. The median income for a household in the township was $45,368, and the median income for a family was $50,833. Males had a median income of $39,569 versus $25,221 for females. The Per Capita Income for the township was $20,676. 12.0% of the population and 8.5% of families were below the Poverty Line . 18.1% of those under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. GOVERNMENT Local government Members of the Montague Township Committee are Mayor Joseph Barbagallo, Deputy Mayor John Soracco, William Campana, Mark Krebs and Joseph Lashendock. Federal, state and county representation Montague Township is in the Fifth Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 24th Legislative District.
