|
Monica Luisa Macovei is a Romanian independent politician and activist. She is currently the Popescu-Tăriceanu government's Minister of Justice, and is the only minister in the current cabinet not to belong to a political party. She has largely been credited for significantly reforming Romania's justice system in 2005, which is of key importance for Romania's Accession To The European Union in 2007. Some of her actions as Minister of Justice have, however, been criticised by media and the opposition parties. Among other sources of dispute: # Macovei directly intervened in a process where her mother obtained one house. The intervention concerned the illegal change of the judges that were randomly picked to judge the case. It is also generally agreed that the decision in this case (given by the judges appointed by Macovei) goes against exiting laws. # Macovei maintains close ties with Dinu Patriciu (CEO of Rompetrol ), who is accused of fraud. Before becoming a minister, Macovei was an important independent Civil Society activist for political reform and democratisation in Romania, particularly during the Năstase government. |
