Mithun Chakraborty

Mithun Chakraborty (, 1947 ) (original name Gouranga Chakraborty) is a superstar and megastar in India. He was born in Kolkata and educated at the Scottish Church College, Calcutta , where he studied B.SC . He graduated from the Film And Television Institute Of India . He started his film career in a Hindi film made by Mrinal Sen . He shot into national prominence with his films 'Suraksha', 'Patita','Wardat', 'Hum Paanch','Disco Dancer' et al and was at one time, regarded as a rival to Amitabh Bachchan . He has acted in over 400 films and is considered a megastar, a messiah, a legend in his own right.

Mithun not only achieved a lot of commercial success but also tremendous critical acclaim ('winning National Awards thrice'), for his performances in his first film ''Mrigaya'' as well as for films ''Tahader Katha'' and ''Ramakrishna''), Mithun's statements evidence the humility of one who has 'come up the hard way'. He also won the Filmfare award for 'Jallad' and has won many awards in India and abroad in the last 31 years.

During the mid 1990s he shifted his focus from the mainstream cinema and went into developing his own movies. These movies were mainly targeted towards people whose social status can at best be described as modest.

He tried to pull out an industry out of this. Initially, he was successful, no doubt, but to have a sustained growth and returns he now needs to pull some other rabbit out of his hat.

In his heyday, earned a huge fan following as a 'dancing star', one who runs a parallel film industry from his South Indian abode of Ooty , is 'God' for a generation of audiences unaware of the Hrithik Roshans and the Sanjay Dutts of this world, who owns an entire chain of hotels in Ooty and one who, was the highest tax payer in the country for five consecutive years, from 1994 to 1999.
He has done and continues to do Social Service all over India .
