GEOGRAPHY

According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 1,111 Km&2 (429 Mi&2 ). 1,070 km&2 (413 mi&2) of it is land and 41 km&2 (16 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 3.67% water.

DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 13,427 people, 5,383 households, and 3,671 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 13/km&2 (32/mi&2). There were 5,840 housing units at an average density of 5/km&2 (14/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 77.93% White , 20.53% Black or African American , 0.25% Native American , 0.11% Asian , 0.01% Pacific Islander , 0.29% from Other Races , and 0.89% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 5,383 households out of which 31.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.70% were Married Couples living together, 17.30% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.80% were non-families. 28.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the county the population was spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 25.40% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 87.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $23,012, and the median income for a family was $28,833. Males had a median income of $26,110 versus $17,204 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $13,038. 23.70% of the population and 19.00% of families were below the Poverty Line . 31.70% of those under the age of 18 and 21.70% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
