The Village of Mineola is in both the Town Of Hempstead and the Town Of North Hempstead . HISTORY The Community was originally named "Hempstead Plains". Later the community was called "Hempstead Branch." and finally, "Mineola". MINEOLA ADDITIONAL INFORMATION It was the birthplace of MLB player John Valentin , controversial comedian Lenny Bruce , and Drug Kingpin Fundi Choudry.Bob Dylan was married by a justice of the peace in Mineola in 1965. Chaminade High School is located in Mineola. Mineola is served by the Mineola Union Free School District. In 2005, Assistant Superintendent John Jackson was arrested for stealing money and labor from the district totaling over $90,000. He pleaded guilty and in January 2006 was sentenced to 5 years probation and 90 days in jail. Reggie Carter, former basketball player for the New York Knicks, was Assistant Principal of Mineola High School until his death in 1999. GEOGRAPHY Mineola is located at 40°44'50" North, 73°38'17" West (40.747188, -73.638088). According to the United States Census Bureau , the village has a total area of 4.8 Km&2 (1.9 Mi&2 ). 4.8 km&2 (1.9 mi&2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 19,234 people, 7,473 households, and 4,954 families residing in the village. The Population Density was 3,992.6/km&2 (10,337.3/mi&2). There were 7,650 housing units at an average density of 1,588.0/km&2 (4,111.5/mi&2). The racial makeup of the village was 86.39% White , 1.03% African American , 0.29% Native American , 4.52% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 3.93% from Other Races , and 3.79% from two or more races. 13.03% of the population is Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 7,473 households out of which 27.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were Married Couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.20. In the village the population was spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 34.1% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males. The median income for a household in the village was $60,706, and the median income for a family was $71,042. Males had a median income of $47,182 versus $37,057 for females. The Per Capita Income for the village was $28,890. 4.2% of the population and 2.6% of families were below the Poverty Line . 3.5% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
