He was born in Willington Quay , Wallsend on Tyneside , UK. He was the main Anchorman of '' North East Tonight '', the local ITV news programme for the North East of England until late 2005 when he underwent an operation to remove a blood clot from his leg which has kept him from viewers' screens. Johnathan Morrell, Kim Inglis, Andy Kluz and Pam Royle have been taking on the presentation of North East Tonight in Mike's absence. A young Mike Neville's roots lay in North East theatre but the launch of a new TV Channel in 1959, Tyne Tees Television , offered a new opportunity and Mike began work as young reporter on the fledgling station. He later switched to the rival BBC news programme '' Look North '' and was the main presenter for 32 years. He also regularly presented the BBC's Nationwide programme during the 80s, but turned down offers to move to London, preferring to stay in the North East of England. In 1996, Mike was approached by Yorkshire Tyne Tees TV and offered a chance to return to the commercial station. Tyne Tees offered him his own hour long news programme, " North East Tonight with Mike Neville". Mike made the switch back and led the ratings until his illness. Mike's move also co-incided with a complete name change for the station as Tyne Tees became Channel 3 North East. He is highly regarded in the area for his solid presentational style and witty banter with local weatherman Bob Johnson . Neville was awarded the Member Of The British Empire (MBE) for services to broadcasting in 1990. He lives with his wife of 40 years, Pam. EXTERNAL LINKS |
