(born
27 May ,
1975 ,
Morley, Western Australia ) is an
Australia n
Cricketer . A left-handed
Batsman , he is a relative latecomer to both the
Test and
ODI Australian sides, but he has made a highly succesful start to his international career. He plays his
First-class Cricket for the
Western Warriors in Australia, and has played for several counties in
England .
Statistically, Hussey's career so far has been extraordinarily successful. His
Batting Average in both forms of the game is over 70, and he currently tops the list of best averages ever in ODI cricket. This is partly due to an early string of
Not Out s, but nevertheless, his
Strike Rate (runs per 100 balls faced) of 99.27 is also the highest in the Australian ODI career records list. He is not currently on the equivalent lists in Test cricket because he has played fewer than 20 innings, but this will probably change soon. Hussey was the fastest player to reach the top 10 of the
LG ICC Cricket Ratings {Link without Title} .
Hussey made his Test debut for Australia against the
West Indies in the first Test at
Brisbane in November 2005. He replaced opening batsman
Justin Langer , who was declared unfit to play after suffering a cracked rib in an
ING Cup match the previous weekend. Hussey was the most experienced Australian Test debutant in history, having played 176 first-class matches and scored 15,313 runs at first-class level before receiving his
Baggy Green . His debut ended in disappointing fashion as he was out for only 1 in his first innings and 29 in his second. In the following Test, at
Bellerive Oval in
Tasmania , he made amends and scored 137 and 39 not out and was named
Man Of The Match . In the third Test at
Adelaide Oval , Hussey was moved down the order to number 5 to accomodate the return of Langer. He made 133 not out in the first innings and 30 not out in the second, bringing his Test average to 120. Since being moved down the order Hussey has proved invaluable to the Australian team, often building impressive partnerships with the tailend batsmen, the most impressive being a 107-run 11th wicket partnership with
Glenn McGrath in the second Test match in the 2005/06
South African tour of Australia. Hussey continued his remarkable batting with tailenders against
Bangladesh when he and
Jason Gillespie (batting as a night watchman) put together a 320 run partnership, with Hussey making a career-best 182.
Hussey's brother
David plays
First-class Cricket for the
Victorian Bushrangers in Australia, and for
Nottinghamshire in England.
Hussey first earned a Cricket Australia contract in 2004-05 after excelling in the ING Cup, where he is a middle-order stroke maker and forms a prolific engine room with
Murray Goodwin . At 29 he is eighth of 6471 on the list of all-time Western Australian run-makers in the Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup.
Due to his devotion to the game Hussey has the nickname of "Mr. Cricket", which appeared on the back of his shirt in the Twenty20 International against South Africa in 2006.
In the third
Super Series match on
October 9 ,
2005 , Hussey became the first person to hit the roof of
Telstra Dome (the
ICC World XI 's
Makhaya Ntini was the bowler).
On
February 6 ,
2006 , Hussey tied with
Adam Gilchrist ,
Andrew Symonds and
Brett Lee on 22 votes for the Australian One-Day Player of the Year at the annual
Allan Border Medal presentation. However, after Symonds was eliminated through suspension, and Lee and then Gilchrist were eliminated on countback, Hussey was named the outright winner. Hussey also came second overall in the Allan Border medal his first year in international cricket.
On
April 18 ,
2006 Hussey set a new world record as the fastest player in terms of time to reach 1000 Test runs.
{Link without Title} He reached the milestone in just 166 days.
