In 2005, Dean was suspended for three months due to his involvement with a Horse Racing betting company, in which he appeared to be violating his refereeing contract by using his football status to help promote the bettinc company. (BBC) He was originally appointed to referee the 2006 FA Cup final in Cardiff. However, after concerns were raised about his ability to be impartial towards Liverpool F.C. , who are based near Dean's home town on Merseyside , the Football Association took the unusual step of replacing him with Alan Wiley .
