The Dow Chemical Company was founded in Midland in 1897. Its world headquarters are still located there. Through the influence of a Dow Chemical plants opening in Handa, Aichi , Japan , Midland and Handa have become Sister Cities . {Link without Title} GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 90.5 Km&2 (35.0 Mi&2 ). 86.0 km&2 (33.2 mi&2) of it is land and 4.5 km&2 (1.7 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 4.95% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 41,685 people, 16,743 households, and 11,000 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 484.5/km&2 (1,254.9/mi&2). There were 17,773 housing units at an average density of 206.6/km&2 (535.0/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 93.38% White , 1.82% African American , 0.29% Native American , 2.69% Asian , 0.06% Pacific Islander , 0.57% from Other Races , and 1.19% from two or more races. 1.92% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 16,743 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% were Married Couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% were non-families. 28.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.00. In the city the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.1 males. The median income for a household in the city was $48,444, and the median income for a family was $64,949. Males had a median income of $53,208 versus $31,098 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $26,818. 8.8% of the population and 5.5% of families were below the Poverty Line . 9.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
