The village was originally known as 'Middleton', which later became worn down to 'Milton'. After the Norman invasion, the Cahaines family held the manor from 1166 to the late C13 as well as others in the country (Ashton Keynes, Somerford Keynes, and Horsted Keynes). During this time the village became known as Middleton de Keynes eventually shorting to Milton Keynes . (Source: Woodfield, Paul. After the development of Milton Keynes New City, the original village it was named after became generally known as Middleton again, although the civil parish is still formally called Milton Keynes. (The civil parish for the new centre is called "Central Milton Keynes"). Although designed and built to be a city, Milton Keynes is still Legally a town. |
